Dès la fin des années '60, Peter Gabriel fait partie d'un groupe dont il est co-fondateur : "Genesis"
En 1975, après la tournée "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" il quitte le groupe pour s'orienter vers une carrière Solo.

En 1977 et 1978 sortiront ses premiers albums, mais c'est à partir de 1980 que Peter Gabriel affiche un genre musical
personel en puisant dans les rhytmes noirs africains ou en s'inspirant des ambiances orientales.
Il restera par la suite fidèle à cette orientation.

En 1982, il fonde le "World of Music, Art and Dance"
(WOMAD), festival de promotion de l'art et de la culture.
Le succès public et commercial arrive grace aux albums "Security" et "So" dont plusieurs hits sont extraits (Shock the monkey, Sledgehammer, Don't Give Up...)
En 1989, il crée le Label "RealWorld". Label de promotion pour la musique du monde

L'album "Us" permet à Peter Gabriel de maintenir sa présence sur la scène musicale internationale.
Il faudra cependant attendre 1999, pour entendre de nouveaux titres : Le spectacle musical "Ovo" donné au Millénium Dome de Londres
pour le nouveau millénaire, apportera en 2000 un album du même titre.
S'en suit en 2002, le magnifique album "Up", qui nous permet d'attendre "I/O", son prochain album...
En ce qui concerne sa discographie, ne pas oublier les compositions faites pour le cinéma.

Il faut également noter dans la carrière de Peter Gabriel plusieurs tournées mondiales ayant donné lieu à divers enregistrements:
- En 1983, "Peter Gabriel Plays Live" est la première tournée de Peter Gabriel en solo.
- En 1994, "Secret World Live" est la tournée consécrant l'album "Us"
- En 2003, "Growing Up" assure la promotion de l'album "Up".
